Comedy Masala International

Have you ever attended a stand-up comedy show? Well let me tell you what it’s like. Don’t get me wrong, if my tone seems like it wasn’t a fun thing to do. Being a writer, the power of words is something that I am well aware of. When it comes to stand-up comedy, it isn’t only about the words, it becomes part and parcel with the presentation and delivery of the punch line.
#comedymasala was my second experience for a comedy show. A little back ground in what exactly #comedymasla is….
Comedy Masala is a platform which was founded by Umar Rana in 2010. Starting as a stand-up comedy show, put together on a weekly basis, this has now become a giant known all over the world. The concept behind putting this together has now progressed to a level where there is no limit to the audience reach they have.
#comedymasala was held in Karachi, Pakistan for 3 days. I was honored to attend the show on the opening night. It was held at PACC, where the audience comprised of expectant individuals, for attending a show which promised great bouts of laughter. The event showcased three stand comedians: Stephen Carlin, Rex Navarrete and Jonathan Atherton. And also the founder Umar Rana.
For someone who hasn’t heard or seen any of these comedians perform, it was an enlightening experience. Let me explain why… being a girl in a society where talking about sex, and using the word fuck is not allowed, it was a breath of fresh air being in a crowd which held no judgement on jokes built these two.
A good comedian is someone who is able to share a laugh at their own expense. All three were able to do exactly that. What with Rana’s jokes about him and his current girlfriend, Stephen’s jokes about his sex life, Rex’s jokes about his immigrant status in the great US and Jonathans jokes regarding his life. All of this combined to deliver a fun packed event.
As previously mentioned, these comedians were able to cater to the audience. They combined three essential items: words, delivery and the ability to laugh at their expense. Keeping in mind that some of them were performing to a demanding Karachiite audience for the first time, it was amazing to see the response they got.

I highly doubt that there will be something similar coming up anytime soon. Keeping in mind, that not many can organize such an event with such a great line up.

The Simplistic Beauty of the Motia Bangle

Simple, small wishes are what life really comes down to at some point. Well not always, but sometimes. In summers, in Pakistan, we get this flower, known as the Motia, a flower of the Jasmine family. It is the most beautiful and simple flower I have ever come across. Roses, are by far the most adored flower in world. While the motia is the most underrated flower I have come across. If a man buys me a bangle of motia, he would have a road straight to the heart. What it means, getting such a bangle from a man, is that he thought about you while he stopped at a light. Out of a Dream

Dreams are all about what you might want from life, but are not aware of it yet. As time goes by adults stop putting much store in the foundation of dreams. People disregard what they dream about and what their dreams are. Dreams are just that dreams. Things or ideas which you might aspire for. Without dreams, not much can be innovated or achieved.  Dreams have always had a special place in my life. I have a deep belief in the dreams which come to me at night and the dreams that I dream by day. They both are a part of who I am as a person. They are what will shape me as a human being.
